The character limit for a single text is only 160! Crafting compelling copy for an SMS marketing campaign is difficult. Keep in mind the following SMS marketing best practices to successfully engage and convert your customers. Every day, mobile phones are notified with messages from businesses vying for customers' attention. Too many ads, emails, and of course text messages, leading to information overload. According to Frontiers research, customers struggle to make decisions when there is too much information to process. Research from the Technical University of Denmark shows that constant exposure to content is shrinking our collective attention span. In SMS copywriting, this means that you should limit each piece of text to just one thought. Make sure your message revolves around a single promotion or product and has a call to action (CTA). Always proofread your text before sending it off to make sure you don't cram more than one idea, promotion, or call-to-action into your text.

This text from Jack in the Box is a perfect example of this best practice: Focus your text messages on positive reasons to use your product or service. Emphasize the key benefits or incentives the customer will receive by taking the desired action. This is important because people understand positive speech 30% to 40% faster than negative speech. Over time, your customers will start to develop positive emotions towards your brand, which in turn may generate positive reactions. Tell customers what they have to gain by responding quickly, not what they have to lose if you run an SMS campaign promoting limited-time offers. Let's say you're promoting a phone number listing that's coming to an end with your summer sale. Here's a good example: the entire text consists of three sentences, two of which express something positive. The last sentence creates a sense of urgency without causing panic or fear. Follow suit and avoid sentences like "hurry up before time runs out" or "deals don't last forever."

If the above statement makes your eyes itch, you're not alone. While using such short texting terms and unusual abbreviations (called "textese") can give you more room, it doesn't guarantee that everyone will understand what you're trying to say. If your target audience consists only of millennials and/or the Zoom generation, your target audience is more likely to understand text because they are more digital than other generations. Even these customer groups can misinterpret your message because not all texts are universal and constantly evolving. Always strive to use simple, clear language in your copy, and spell out words in full to ensure all customers understand your message correctly. You can work around strict character limits without resorting to text by writing snippets instead of full sentences. For example, instead of writing "This offer will remain valid until 12/31," you could simply say "Offer valid until 12/31."
