Isabel Buil , director of the Affinity Foundation, Jaume Fatjó , director of the Chair of the Affinity Animals and Health Foundation at the UAB, and Lorenzo Milá, presenter of the program, have analyzed the problem of abandonment and loss of dogs and cats, the which affects more than 288,000 animals in Spain. Although this is a very high figure, it represents approximately 3% of its total population, which indicates that 97% of the animals are not abandoned and are cared for by their families. There is still a long way to go, but the importance of companion animals in society is growing and the bond between people and animals will continue to strengthen.
In the program, the main data of the study have been discussed De Cell Number and its main conclusions have been explained, for example:
There are more and more cats in our homes and the number of cats arriving at shelters is increasing. In 2022, more than 118,000 cats have been collected, of which 48% were puppies.
The number of abandoned or lost cats without a microchip is still very high, only 3% of the cats that reach shelters have it. In the case of dogs, 25%.
The first 5 reasons for abandonment are: unwanted litters, behavioral problems of the animal, loss of interest in the animal, the end of the hunting season and economic factors.
Sterilization, the use of the microchip, adoption and education are the 4 main actions to combat the abandonment of dogs and cats.
50% of abandoned or lost dogs and 47% of cats manage to be adopted by new families at animal shelters.
The abandonment figures are very similar to those of previous years, but they are still high. In Spain, animal shelters collect approximately 24,000 animals per month, 790 animals every day, or 33 animals every hour. However, the adoption of dogs and cats is also present and of the total number of animals collected in 2022, 47% of cats and 50% of dogs have been adopted. “We can talk about a certain stability in the numbers of dogs and cats collected by shelters, but it is still a relevant challenge in which people, entities, professionals and the public administration can provide solutions,” says Isabel Buil, director of the shelter. Affinity Foundation.
Regarding the health status of the dogs and cats collected, it is alarming to note that the cat is an animal very vulnerable to abandonment: many of them are injured (15%) or sick (38%) when they are collected. A fact that influences the fact that 12% die during their stay in the shelter
It is important to raise awareness among the population about the responsible ownership of pets, and among families about the effective control of the reproduction of pets to avoid the abandonment of unwanted litters and prevent the massive arrival of puppies to shelters. . Sterilization, identification, education and adoption are the 4 most important strategies to prevent and minimize the impact of abandonment of companion animals.
