What is the Recorder?
The Recorder is an uncommon gadget categorized as “Quick Use.” Essentially, it’s a playable instrument that attracts the attention of ARCs—the enemies you face during missions. Its main purpose is crowd control and creating distractions, and it can also be used to impress other Raiders for fun, although this second effect is mostly cosmetic.
From a gameplay perspective, it’s similar to carrying a Field Crate in that it temporarily restricts your other actions. While playing the Recorder, you cannot use weapons, other gadgets, breach doors, or search containers unless you unequip it. This is an important limitation to remember because timing its use can make or break a fight.

How Does the Recorder Sound Work?
When you hold the Fire button, the Recorder plays one of two repeating melodies. The sound is loud enough that nearby ARCs will notice and often move toward it. Players usually position themselves in safe areas or behind cover when using it, because you are vulnerable during the playback.
In practice, most players use it in the following ways:
  • Luring ARCs away from objectives: Drop a Recorder in a corridor or room while teammates complete mission goals.
  • Buying time during a rush: If ARCs are overwhelming, start the Recorder to draw them toward you and give your team a few seconds to regroup.
  • Team coordination: Advanced players sometimes use the Recorder in combination with ranged attacks, leading ARCs into traps or kill zones.

It’s not a damage tool, so don’t expect it to eliminate enemies. Its effectiveness comes purely from controlling enemy movement.

Where Can You Find the Recorder?
There are a few reliable ways to get a Recorder:
  • Scavenging: Sometimes it spawns in residential areas.
  • Vendors: Apollo sells it for 3,000 Coins, limited to six per day. Shani sells it for 50 Cred, limited to three per day.
  • Buying in-game: If you’re looking for convenience, you can also buy arc raiders items with real money, which occasionally includes the Recorder or similar gadgets.

From experience, vendor purchases are usually the quickest way to get multiple Recorders for consistent use, especially if you like carrying spares.

Repairing the Recorder
Like any gadget, the Recorder can break during missions. Repairing it requires:
  • 1 Recorder (the broken one)
  • 4 Plastic Parts

Plastic Parts are easy to scavenge from various containers or recycled from other items. Keeping a stock of spares is practical because ARCs can destroy the Recorder while it’s in use, and you don’t want to be left without one mid-mission.

Recycling and Salvaging
If you have extra Recorders or damaged ones, recycling and salvaging is straightforward:
  • Recycling returns 10 Plastic Parts per Recorder.
  • Salvaging returns 4 Plastic Parts per Recorder.

In practice, most players recycle duplicates for the higher yield. Salvaging is typically reserved for situations where you need some materials quickly and don’t want to wait for a full recycle batch.

Practical Tips for Using the Recorder
  • Use it behind cover: You’re defenseless while playing, so don’t stand in the open.
  • Know ARC behavior: Some ARCs respond immediately, while others are slower. Learning patterns helps maximize distraction.
  • Combine with teammates: One player draws ARCs with the Recorder while others flank or secure objectives.
  • Don’t overuse it: The Recorder is situational. Using it randomly can sometimes disrupt team flow rather than help.
  • Position wisely: Place it where ARCs have to travel through chokepoints to reach it. This prolongs the distraction and keeps your team safe.

Common Questions from Players
Q: Can I attack while playing the Recorder? No. You cannot use weapons, gadgets, or breach doors while playing. Plan accordingly.
Q: How long does the sound last?It continues as long as you hold the Fire button. You can stop anytime by releasing it, but it’s best to keep it going until ARCs are fully drawn to the location.
Q: Does the Recorder stack with other Recorders?Yes, multiple Recorders can be placed in different areas, allowing you to split enemy attention across the map. Experienced teams sometimes use this tactic during high-difficulty missions.
Q: Is it worth buying with Coins or Cred?If you’re actively using the Recorder in missions, yes. Vendor limits can be restrictive, so buying extra gadgets in-game or even buying arc raiders items with real money can ensure you always have one ready.

The Recorder is a tool for strategy, not combat. Used properly, it allows you to control enemy movement, support teammates, and create opportunities in tricky missions. It requires planning and timing because of its limitations, but in the hands of a coordinated team, it can be surprisingly effective.
Keep a few in your inventory, know where to place them, and practice timing. Once you understand ARC responses, the Recorder becomes less of a novelty and more of a tactical asset.
